Two mysterious travellers crash-land in the early 20th century, catapulted 336 years into the past by a quantum explosion. But these are no ordinary time travellers – they come from a dystopian future where the very essence of humanity has warped and twisted beyond recognition.

Their arrival triggers a chain of shocking events, starting with the brutal murders of four policemen. As the body count rises, the indomitable Detective Inspector Hadleigh and his loyal driver Betts find themselves plunged into a labyrinth of clues and corpses, each more perplexing than the last.

But nothing can prepare them for the shattering truth they uncover: a sinister cult operating in the shadows, with motives as unexpected and dark as the future the unwitting travellers left.

It is the seventh book of the series.

Some years ago, I rented a house in a small village—Meilhan-sur-Garonne, in the southwest of France. My simple intention was to write a novel. The setting was idyllic. Bordeaux was an hour away, and its sun-baked vineyards, the occasional classic château, and the fields of sunflowers were a delight and inspiration to the traveller’s eye.

I heard the baby sparrow before I found her. She was lying in the gutter outside my two-up, two-down rental, distressed, in pain, and sizzling in the glare of the sun. The tiny bundle of bone and skin was no bigger than a quail's egg—no sign of feathers and barely alive. She had fallen from a nest in the guttering. I picked her up and brought her into the kitchen. The internet was a helpful guide to what she could eat and how to nurse her. She ate and drank a little, but after a couple of days, she died.
